Examples of silicone moulds- StuartBray73

On my suggested images on instagram I saw an image of what looked like some special effects make up. I clicked on this image and found the account of a freelance prosthetic and special effects makeup artist, and thought it was really interesting to look at some images of how silicone prosthetics can be used.

His instagram is linked below. I was really inspired by his work, especially the way in which he makes the skin colour look natural by using lots of different tones.

Final Unit Evaluation

This unit I have really enjoyed learning new techniques, especially the mould making. I found it really interesting to use low tech materials to create the appearance of body modifications, and really enjoyed creating different effects using materials that either weren’t intended for make up, or that we had used to create different looks with previously. I think it was really important for us to push the boundaries with make up so we know what we can do and what we are capable of. I am really happy with how my first and second anthropological images went, especially the second one, and feel that they look good together as a pair with the similar but not identical designs. I enjoyed using wax and cutting into it, but did struggle with blending it into the skin and making it pick up the same as skin under the studio lighting, which I practiced and improved slightly, so will continue to practice and improve. I found that with this brief I found so many things that inspired me, so at times I did find it hard to narrow down my ideas but through practices and research I managed to get down to 3 designs; anthropological image 1, anthropological image 2 and the final design using a mould. I feel that I really understood and enjoyed the mould making process, and I am definitely happy that we learned this as I can use this process for so many future tasks and feel that it is great knowledge to have. I did struggle with the blending of the prosthetic when I first tried, but I know why this was so I can work on it and improve. I redesigned my mould so that it would better fit on the forehead area and won’t need as much space to blend out. When creating my final mould image I found it useful that I had tried it before so I knew what to do to blend it well. One of my prosthetics took a little more time to blend as the glue wasn’t fully dry but the left hand prosthetic went on well and blended into the skin really successfully so I am happy about that. I have been enjoying experimenting with drawing and collaging more this term and will definitely take this into next term as I found it was a good way of trying things out and playing around with application techniques. I struggled to find inspiration for my final mould design more than one or two images, but I still feel like I managed to create an interesting and unique design with the teeth impressions. I enjoyed looking at contemporary fashion uses of special effects as it really brings an element of variety to our work, and shows that the techniques we are learning can be applied in many ways and it expands our knowledge and experience.

Final Mould Shoot

To create my final design I started by cleansing and toning the skin, before adding a barrier foam. I then used pritt stick to flatten down the eyebrows to the head, as I planned to cover them. Then I applied prosaide to the prosthetic and the eyebrow area. When this was tacky and clear I applied the prosthetic to the skin, stretching it out as I did so. I then ensured this was all flat to the skin with no air bubbles by rolling the handle of a clean make up brush over the area from the middle to the edges, pushing out any air. Then, being very careful and covering the eye with a cotton pad, I worked around the edges of the prosthetic blending and melting them into the skin. After I had blended them both in, I used an orange-pink supra colour to cancel out the brow colour, before applying foundation all over the face. After looking at this I decided that I didn't like how the mid section of the brows looked while covered, I used a cotton bud and some cleanser to remove the glue and colouring before reapplying roundation in the surrounding area.
To finish off I flicked some of the reds and yellows from the alcohol activated palette, and used a dark concealer on a pointed eye liner brush to enhance and contour the indents in the mould.

Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2010

Alexander McQueen. (2011). Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010 (Platos Atlantis Spécial Edition) . [Online Video]. 23 August. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_2bBiAZgXk. [Accessed: 10 December 2014].

The Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2010 show features out-of-this-world hair and make up designs. The hair promotes structured plaits in a crown-antenna hybrid shape. The make up features prosthetics to accentuate the cheekbones and forehead, making it more pointed and chiselled. I noticed similarities between my low tech anthropological designs and the make up designs on the models' with the wax over the cheekbones. It is almost like the texture of the hair has been put on the cheekbone wax pieces. It was really interesting to see the use of prosthetics in the fashion industry, as for a lot of people when they think of special effects they go straight to film and television, but it shows just how versatile these methods of special effects and prosthetic application that we are learning can be.

ORLAN

ORLAN is a French artist working in LA, New York and Paris. She always writes her name in capitals and has not got a fixed medium for her work.
In the 90's, ORLAN created a series titled "The Reincarnation of Saint-Orlan". This series featured Orlan transforming herself through plastic surgery into the ideal of female beauty by taking elements from beautiful women in art to create one look.

I think it is interesting how Orlan looked at ideas of beauty and beauty ideals, and went through such an extreme to create it. It is a really interesting way of thinking about and expressing art.
